Villnöß is a beautiful Dolomite valley
in the heart of the Puez Geisler Nature Park.
It is the green heart of the nature park, an oasis of tranquillity
between the ski carousels of Gröden and Plose. Villnöß
promotes "green tourism". The rural
cultural landscape flows seamlessly into untouched
forests and alpine meadows in full bloom at the foot
of the majestic Geislerspitzen, remarkable
rock towers and mountain peaks which are also known as the
pale mountains because of their limestone content.
Villnöss is the name of the whole valley. The community
of Villnöß comprises six municipal districts and
various hamlets: Teis, St. Valentin, St. Peter (the main village),
St. Jakob, Coll and St. Magdalena.
The Villnöss valley runs from east to west , extending
from Ruefen and the Geisler Group to Eisacktal, north of Klausen.
It is approximately 24km long with a maximum altitude differential
of 2,490m. This orientation of the valley and its special
geological structure – characterised by the overlaying
of geologically younger rock formations by the older quartz
phyllite – have left their mark on the landscape and
influenced its human settlement.
The Puez Geisler Nature Park was extended
in 1999 and now boasts an area of around 10,196 hectares,
which encompasses the communities of Abtei, Corvara, Villnöß,
St. Martin in Thurn, St. Ulrich, St. Christina in Gröden
and Wolkenstein in Gröden. The Puez Geisler Nature Park
can be regarded as the "Showcase of the Dolomites"
since it exhibits all the rock formations, strata and erosional
forms typical of the Dolomite region.
